Description

6 days of trekking around Mount Toubkal from Marrakech. A magnificent North African mountain: the summit of Toubkal (4167 m), breathtaking views of the Atlas mountains and green villages in the Berber valleys, with our local guide and muleteers. The route suits keen hikers; the climb is non-technical, with a few easy slopes and some snow (crampons and an ice axe for safety from October to May). Available in all four seasons.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Marrakech – Imi Oughlad 1450m – Tizi N'Tacht 2000m – Tiziane 1750m

Morning transfer from Marrakech to Imi Oughlad (1450 m), the starting point. Meet the team, guide and muleteers. After tea, the bags are loaded and the first day of walking begins, via Tizi N’Tacht (2000 m). Lunch on the way, then on to the village of Tiziane (1750 m). Dinner and overnight in a gîte. 4 to 5 hours of walking.

DAY 2

Tiziane 1750m – Tikent 1800m

Discover the Azzaden valley with its terraced fields rich in iron oxide, mud-brick villages and fruit trees. Over the Tizi Takherrourte pass, lunch on the way, then the village of Tikent, known for its walnuts. Overnight in a guesthouse. 5 to 6 hours of walking.

DAY 3

Tikent 1800m – Tizi Tagoudalte 2040m – Azib Tamsoult Refuge 2250m

Leave the Tikent valley for Tizi Tagoudalte, with panoramic views over the valley and the peaks west of Toubkal. A path among junipers, past the Tourette shepherds’ huts to the village of Tizi Oussem (1850 m), lunch, then a hike to Azib Tamsoult. Overnight at the refuge.

DAY 4

Azib Tamsoult 2300m – Aguelzim Pass 3450m – Toubkal Refuge 3200m

Climb on a well-marked path to the Aguelzim pass (3450 m), with panoramic views over the whole massif (Toubkal 4167 m, Ouanoukrim 4080 m, Oukaïmeden 3700 m…). Descent to the Toubkal Refuge. 6 h 30 of walking.

DAY 5

Ascent of Toubkal 4165m – Descent to Aroumd 1900m

Start around 5 am to climb the roof of North Africa. From the summit, panoramic views over the volcanic Toubkal massif and the surrounding mountains. Back to the refuge for lunch, then descent to Aroumd. Overnight in a lodge. 8 to 9 hours of walking.

DAY 6

Aroumd 1900m – Imlil 1700m – Marrakech

After breakfast, transfer to Marrakech.

Additional information

Hiking clothing

Dress for the altitude and the terrain. Temperatures often change a lot, and it is colder higher up.

  • Comfortable walking boots (broken in before the trek)
  • A tracksuit and a pair of trainers for the refuges
  • Two pairs of wool socks
  • Warm down jacket and waterproof hooded jacket
  • Warm hat and sun hat
  • A pair of wool gloves and a pair of sandals
  • Cotton T-shirts and shorts / long skirts
  • Wool shirts, thick jumpers, waterproof trousers and a windbreaker
  • Light or heavy trousers and a light long-sleeved shirt
  • Thermal underwear

Most of this equipment can be rented locally in Imlil.
